Master of Science in Nursing
Director, Clinical Practice and Quality- William Osler Health System
William Osler is Ontario's largest community hospital serving the diverse and growing communities of Etobicoke, Brampton and surrounding regions of the Central West Local Health Integration Network. As a regional referral centre, Osler provides programs and services to nearly one million area residents. Incorporated in 1998, Osler has three unique sites, each providing a wide range of services:
" Brampton Civic Hospital provides Osler's most complex and seriously ill or injured patients through a mix of inpatient and outpatient services.
" Etobicoke General Hospital is a traditional community hospital that provides all aspects of care from emergency care to surgery and specialist visits.
" Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, targeted to open in 2015, will provide urgent and emergency care; day surgery and specialty clinics; and focus on helping individuals with chronic conditions manage their disease better.
The Director of Clinical Practice and Quality is responsible for the resources, strategic goals and objectives, results, decision-making and impact of services for the portfolio. The Director will also ensure alignment of strategic directions for the portfolio with corporate and clinical directions and priorities and provide guidance and leadership support for the team to ensure a high profile across the organization. The portfolio consists of:
" Nursing and Professional Practice
" Clinical Resource Team
" Infection Control
" Quality and Patient Safety
Reporting to the Executive Directors of Clinical Services, the successful is accountable for the following:
" Demonstrating leadership by fostering an environment that supports continuous professional learning, academic linkages and research.
" Identifying and participate in process improvement and change management activities that improve patient care through the achievement of professional standards
" Supporting and influencing the development and use of evidence based best practice throughout Osler
" Guiding the organization to continually improve quality of care and patient safety in order to enhance the patient experience and patient outcomes in collaboration with the Medical Director for Quality and Patient Safety,
" Supporting the development and maintenance of a framework for Quality Based procedures in collaboration with the Medical Director for Quality and Patient Safety.
" Developing methodologies to ensure the spread and sustainability of quality and patient safety projects
" Working collaboratively with Clinical Directors and Executive Directors to shape and implement a vision for practice that will facilitate a dynamic continuous learning organization and excellence in quality professional practice.
" Articulating, implementing and evaluating nursing and professional practice standards and ensuring adherence to those standards.
" Supporting the integration of nursing and professional best practices in key areas corporately.
" Support the Chief Nursing Executive in the development and implementation of the strategic direction for Nursing & Professional Practice.
" Co-Chairing the Nursing Advisory Committee and be a member of the Professional Advisory Committees
" Responding to requests/inquiries from Regulatory Colleges regarding investigations and practice concerns.
" Reviewing regulatory legislation for all disciplines and assist the organization and practitioners to respond to changes in regulation or scope of practice.
" Overseeing all aspects of clinical orientation for all healthcare professionals, unregulated healthcare in addition to all contracts with academic institutions for clinical staff.
" Developing and updating all clinical policies and procedures, clinical pathways and order sets that support nursing and professional practice.
" Continuing to support the evolution of specialty nursing practice.
" Working collaboratively with physician leaders in the development of medical directives.
" Ensuring credentialing processes for all health professional staff.
" Overseeing the pressure ulcer prevention and wound care program and annual pressure ulcer prevalence.
" Supporting internal continuing education programs for all clinical staff in collaboration with academic institutions.
" Establishing formal and informal forums for nurses and professional practitioners to be involved in clinical practice decision making.
" Working collaboratively with Human Resources related to strategic recruitment of all health professionals
" Executing Ministry of Health sponsored programs related to professional development, New Graduate, Late Career and specialty initiatives.
" Maintaining a results orientation (monitors, evaluates and drives performance improvement) that focuses on nursing, professional practice workforce and practice indicators.
" Ensuring strategies are implemented to prevent avoidable healthcare associated infections (HAIs) at all levels in the organization.
" Supporting Quarterly Infection Prevention and Control meetings and providing leadership on outbreak management.
" Collaborating with ID physicians and IPAC physician leads.
" Leading the development of the Annual Quality Improvement Program.
" Coaching and developing a team while ensuring bench strength for leadership.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
" Master's Degree in Nursing, or Master's Degree in a health related discipline or in progress
" Registration or license to practice in good standing
" Minimum eight years experience in clinical practice with a at least five years significant related management experience working in the healthcare industry
" Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build capacity across the organization, through the development of positive internal and external relationships in an atmosphere of trust, with strong conflict resolution and critical thinking skills
" Ability to impact and influence to inspire large numbers of staff through effective communication skills
" Strong organizational awareness and the ability to encourage diversity
" Results orientated with a strong commitment to innovation and ongoing process improvement
" Service and quality orientation that anticipates customer and stakeholder needs
" Visionary leadership with an established reputation for utilizing a consultative, collaborative style of leadership, and for pushing the status quo and helping others to recognize the need for change
" Exceptional leadership and proven ability to develop others; holding self and others accountable.
" Strategic orientation coupled with strong business acumen and proven success in the planning, coordination and execution of services and large-scale initiatives across a corporation.
" Demonstrated ability as a clinical expert who can promote and drive best practices.
" Knowledge of PIDAC and best practice recommendations.
" Knowledge of research methodology.
" Ability to travel between hospital sites on a regular basis.
