POSITION: Non-Union
Medical Laboratory Assistant - One (1) Part Time

DEPARTMENT/CAMPUS:
Lab Specimen Receiving - Etobicoke General Hospital

POSTING NUMBER: 130043

HOURS:
Currently, Days/Evenings and Nights; Weekend and/or Holiday Rotation
(Subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

QUALIFICATIONS:
" Graduate of certified Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician Program
" Must have current certification and registration with OSMT and/or CSMLS
" Successful completion of an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma
" Certified in Transportation of Dangerous Goods preferred
" Minimum 2 years specimen receiving and dispatch experience in a hospital setting preferred
" Previous experience in phlebotomy and microbiology an asset
" Good working knowledge of lab equipment operation and maintenance
" Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain high level of productivity, competence and professionalism
" Excellent organization and communication skills
" Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem solving skills
" Proven ability to be a team player
" Exceptional customer service skills
" Excellent attendance, punctuality and work record
" Meditech and Paradigm computer experience is an asset
" May be required to travel between and work at all hospital sites in accordance with operational needs

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
" Performs specimen receiving and dispatch bench duties, analyzer maintenance, and loading of analyzers
" Registers patient information in computer as needed; accessions specimens; labels, numbers and aliquots specimens as required;
" Distribution of specimens to Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Pathology and Cytology (as applicable)
" Prepares specimens for shipping to other sites in accordance with protocols and MTO TDG regulations
" Venipuncture (as required); Utilizes appropriate specimen collection techniques and equipment including following universal precautions and/or appropriate infection control protocols
" Set up ESR, urinalysis, microhematocrit tests, occult blood and serological tests excluding final reading and interpretation of results
" Maintenance of equipment such as biological safety cabinets, laminar flow hood, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, Chemistry and Hematology power processors (as applicable), incubators
" Assists with issuing of blood and blood component products as required
" Other duties as assigned according to training and scope of practice
" May be required to cross-train into other Lab areas based on operational need
" May be required to attend hospital during off hours to attend to emergency situations
